GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE (1609-64)
A family with a laden ass resting in a landscape
c. 1650-55RCIN 904044
The drawing seems to be the latest of the large oils displayed in this section, and it displays a looser structure than the works of the 1640s. Castiglione’s calligraphic brushwork gets the better of his spatial control: the composition is an accretion of rapidly outlined motifs, with modelling and shadows added sporadically to the jumble of the laden ass and the barely legible heap of objects at lower left.
