REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (LEIDEN 1606-AMSTERDAM 1669)
A self-portrait in a plumed cap
dated 1634RCIN 808192
During the 1630s Rembrandt produced many self-portrait etchings, sometimes in extravagant dress, following a tradition of depictions of exotic figures that appealed strongly to Castiglione. There was a well-established trade in prints between Italy and the Low Countries, and Rembrandt’s etchings would have been available to Castiglione through print dealers in both Rome and Genoa.
