GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE (1609-64)

An unidentified legendary subject

dated 1660

RCIN 970070

Two soldiers clad in ancient armour drag a corpse back to his family, though no literary source for the scene has been identified and it is not impossible that Castiglione invented it. Signed and dated 1660, this is the last of Castiglione’s 25 known monotypes. It was created by dabbing ink onto the printing plate with a stiff brush, and it thus approaches the manner of his oil drawings more closely than the other monotypes displayed here. Cat. 88
