GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE (1609-64)

The Adoration of the Shepherds

c. 1645

RCIN 904080

Though Castiglione was based in Genoa during the first half of the 1640s, he continued to refer frequently to the Roman paintings of Nicolas Poussin. Here he adapted the structure of the composition of Poussin’s Adoration of the Magi, now in Dresden, and figurative components from the same artist’s Adoration of the Shepherds in the National Gallery, London. Both paintings date from 1633 – 4. Cat. 56
