ATTRIBUTED TO SALVATORE CASTIGLIONE (1620-AFTER 1677)

The Adoration of the Shepherds

c. 1650-60

RCIN 904009

Salvatore Castiglione worked in the studio of his elder brother from as early as 1634 until Giovanni Benedetto’s death. He became a skilled mimic of his brother’s drawing style, and their works are often confused. But a coherent group of drawings may with some confidence be attributed to Salvatore, characterised by slick and occasionally careless lines, heavy-jawed figures, and a fondness for details picked out in short strokes of red.
