GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE (1609-64)
The Entry of the Animals into the Ark
c. 1650RCIN 830449
Noah’s three sons herd the animals from a dark wood towards the bright horizon where Noah stands beside the Ark. Perhaps surprisingly, Castiglione did not take the opportunity to include any animals more exotic than a pair of guinea pigs. The sunlit flank of the horse is mostly just blank paper, yet it is the most compelling feature of the entire print.
