GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE (1609-64)

The Saving of the Infant Pyrrhus

c. 1635-40

RCIN 904018

Here Castiglione has reworked the composition of a painting by Nicolas Poussin, a study for which is exhibited below. Did Castiglione have access to the collection of Gian Maria Roscioli, the owner of Poussin’s painting; or was he admitted to Poussin’s studio, where he could have seen preparatory drawings? In either case, he was beginning to make important contacts in Rome. Cat. 12
