c.1550-1600RCIN 933319
A small loose-leaf album which formerly contained 30 drawings mostly by Parmigianino (RCINs 990525-30; 990541; 990544-50; 990562-8; 990579-84; 990589-90; 990592-3). The album is inscribed on the front board: PARMESANE / TOM IV / No 30
The drawings of Parmigianino, greatly prized by English collectors of the seventeenth century, were found in the collections of Nicholas Lanier, Peter Lely (who owned over 100 studies by the artist) and the Earl of Arundel. This small album formerly contained 30 drawings, mainly by Parmigianino, and the existence of etchings after drawings from the album by artists in Arundel's service strongly suggests that he owned the album in the 1630s.
In 1690 Constantijn Huygens records that he had 'looked at some more of the King's drawings in a chest, lying upstairs, containing many drawings with single figures by Parmigianino, and several other good ones'. Though Charles II had died five years earlier, it is most likely - as with the Leonardo and Holbein drawings - that he had come into ownership of the Parmigianino drawings earlier in his reign.
