Charles II

1660

RCIN 602638

Following the Restoration, demand for images of the new king was high. It was noted that ‘the picture of the King Charles the Second was often printed and sett up in houses’ as a display of loyalty to the restored monarchy. This is one of the first prints to depict Charles II as king. His authority and ability to govern are clearly symbolised by his effortless control of his rearing steed.
