ARNOLD VAN WESTERHOUT (1651-1725)

James II

1685

RCIN 602839

Charles II had at least ten children by six mistresses but failed to produce a legitimate heir with Queen Catherine. Following his death on 6 February 1685, the crown therefore passed to his Catholic younger brother, James II. Much effort had been expended by Protestant factions to prevent James inheriting the throne, but Charles II had staunchly defended his brother's right to succeed him. This print was produced in Rome and expresses the hope that James would return Britain to the Catholic faith.
