During his short reign, an equestrian monument to James II was erected in the marketplace at Newcastle. But just months after its completion, James was ousted by the Protestant forces of his son-in-law, William of Orange, and (as the inscription states) drunken soldiers pulled down the statue and threw it into the river Tyne. The bronze was later salvaged and recast into church bells.
