James Scott, Duke of Monmouth and Buccleuch was most famously sketched by Samuel Cooper in one of the studio sketches which remained in the artist's studio at his death and which were later acquired by Charles II for the Royal Collection (RCIN 420645). The difference between the vitality and freedom of that miniature and the present miniature is evident. This lacks Cooper's usual lightness of touch, and is painted a much coarser manner, particularly in the hair, raising some doubt as to whether it can be attributed to Samuel Cooper. It is lower in quality than a signed version by the artist in the Buccleuch Collection, but Graham Reynolds explains this disparity by suggesting that this was one of the many miniatures left unfinished at Cooper's death, some of which were completed by other hands.
