This is an example of the plain style of binding adopted by Charles II for many of his acquisitions. The corners of the panel are simply decorated with crowned, addorsed Cs between palm fronds. The I.M. at the base of the spine shows it was one of the books from the library of John Morris, an antiquary and book-collector, much of whose library was bought by the King soon after the Restoration in 1660.
Contemporary bindings of red goatskin with triple-fillet border to central panel, with cipher of Charles II (a crowned pair of addorsed Cs between pair of palm fronds) to each corner, spines in seven compartments with I.M (for John Morris) at the base of each spine, lettered in the second with the rest with the crowned cipher of Charles II, all edges gilt.
