1667RCIN 1057783
'The Royal Society of London, for the Improving of Natural Knowledge' was founded in 1660 and soon afterwards received a royal charter from Charles II. The king was fascinated by science and took a keen interest in the activities of the society’s fellows, leading scientists and architects such as Robert Boyle, Robert Hooke and Sir Christopher Wren. This book was written by Thomas Sprat, one of the early fellows. It celebrates the society and the king’s role in its foundation and success. The frontispiece was designed by John Evelyn and etched by Wenceslaus Hollar.
