These early nineteenth century watercolours depict the magnificent decoration of the ceilings in the new State Apartments at Windsor Castle executed between 1675 and 1684. The dramatic, illusionistic frescoes were the work of the Italian artist, Antonio Verrio, while the elaborately carved cornices and gilding were carried out by the Dutch sculptor, Grinling Gibbons, and the French gilder, Rene Cousin. The iconography of Verrio's paintings celebrated Charles II as the great saviour, his extraordinary achievements and the peaceful restoration of the Stuart dynasty. This work coincided with Charles Le Brun's decoration of the Grand Galerie at Versailles for Louis XIV and was the first scheme of its kind in England. Only three of the 22 wall and ceiling decorations survived the vigorous restoration of Windsor by George IV.
