ABRAHAM BLOOTELING (1640-90) AFTER SIR PETER LELY (1618–1680)
Charles II
c.1680-90RCIN 602538
Skilled European printmakers migrated to London throughout the seventeenth century, contributing to an increase in the quality and quantity of print production there. Mezzotint is a form of engraving that Charles II's cousin, Prince Rupert, introduced from the Continent. Each mezzotint plate produced a limited number of fine impressions characterised by strong contrasts and velvety tones. Blooteling's monumental portrait of Charles II marks the pinnacle of mezzotint production in the seventeenth century.
