HANS HOLBEIN THE YOUNGER (1497/8-1543)

Frances, Countess of Surrey (1517-1577)

c.1532-3

RCIN 912214

An album containing 80 portrait drawings by Hans Holbein had also been part of Arundel's collection. It had previously been in Charles I's collection but had been exchanged by him for a single painting by Raphael, and the return of the drawings into royal ownership was celebrated in 1675: ‘The Book has long been a Wanderer, but is now most happily fallen into the King's Collection’.
