The Great Fire of London

The Great Fire of London broke out on Sunday 2 September 1666 and raged for three days. Charles commissioned surveys to assess the extent of the destruction and to assist with rebuilding. In this detailed map of the city, Hollar portrays the areas destroyed by fire as ghostly blank spaces, with major lost buildings depicted as simple outlines.
