This is a rare example of a late religious work by Van Dyck, court painter to Charles I. Eight other paintings by the artist were hanging in Whitehall in the 1660s, all of which had been acquired by or painted for Charles I and recovered after the Restoration.
Probably acquired by Charles II, first recorded in the royal collection in 1666.
