Abbè Franz Liszt (1811-86)

1886

RCIN 2907299

In the spring of 1886, the year of his death, Liszt visited England, thus causing great excitement in musical circles here, especially as he attended several performances of his works. On 6 April the Prince and Princess of Wales were present at a concert at St James's Hall, when Liszt's oratorio St Elizabeth was played. Liszt dined with them on 11 April and played the piano for them afterwards. On 7 April he had played for Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle. This photograph of the composer, aged seventy-five, was taken in London during his visit.
