This photograph is from an album of 35 prints, probably all taken during the middle or late 1850s, showing the army camps at Boulogne and Aldershot. In the early 1850s no camp existed in England for the training or concentration of a large number of troops. As Prince Albert took an active interest in all aspects of army organisation, he suggested an experimental army training camp be set up at Chobham. This was successful so a permanent camp was established at Aldershot. It is clear that Aldershot was a source of great interest and pride to Prince Albert.
