During the South African War of 1899-1902, the Imperial Yeomanry Field Hospital and Bearer Company were captured by General Christiaan de Wet on 7 June 1900, when he took Roodewal Station. While in captivity, an officer with the company, Major Stonham, requested permission to go to the General Hospital at Kroonstad, taking with him six or eight ambulance wagons, some of the wounded and a number of his men of the 4th Derbyshire Militia (Sherwood Foresters), and to return with some wagons of provisions for use by the Field Hospital. General de Wet wrote him a pass, which would enable him to travel unmolested and receive any necessary assistance, on 10 June. The pass, with an account of the incident, is mounted with the photograph. Lieutenant Langman, of the Langman Hospital, who took the photograph, accompanied Major Stonham on the journey.
