    The photograph comes from an album of fifty prints, showing life on board HMS Crescent during a voyage, under the Duke of York's command, from June to August 1898. Able-bodied seamen, such as the man receiving his money in this photograph, would have earned 1s. 4d. (6.5 p) a day in 1898.
