FRANCIS BEDFORD (1815-94)

'Terrasse der Rosenau (mit den Ruinen von Lauterberg in der Ferne)'; The Terrace and Fountain of Rosenau Palace

1857

RCIN 2102853

Knowing of Prince Albert's love for his old home, Queen Victoria commissioned a series of photographs of Coburg to be given to him as a birthday present on 26 August 1857. They show the favourite views Prince Albert had often described and which the Queen herself had seen when they travelled there together in 1845. Prince Albert had spent a happy childhood in his father's country residences, including Rosenau, and the influence of the Prince's upbringing can be seen in many aspects of his later life. For example, the design of the terrace at Osborne House, on the Isle of Wight, resembles this terrace at Rosenau.
