ROGER FENTON (1819-69)

Victoria, the Princess Royal, later Empress of Germany (1840-1901), and Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-78)

1856

RCIN 2941850

These portraits taken at Balmoral were part of the last commission Fenton received from the Queen. Victoria, Princess Royal (1840-1901) and Princess Alice (1843-78) are seated on a bench, probably in front of the gardener’s cottage on the Balmoral estate. The artist Edwin Landseer stayed here in 1850 and it may have been where Fenton himself stayed.
