The Diamond Diadem

1820

RCIN 31702

The diadem was made for the coronation of King George IV in July 1821. For this occasion the king rented the diamonds set into the diadem, which was usual at that date. George IV later purchased the diadem and it passed to Queen Adelaide, consort of King William IV who established the tradition of feminine wearing of the diadem which continues today. The Queen memorably wore the diadem on the way to Westminster Abbey for her coronation in June 1953. Her Majesty has continued to wear the diadem on the journey to and from every State Opening of Parliament since the first of her reign in November 1952.
