The Three Graces by Raphael
MICHELANGELO BUONARROTI (1475 - 1564)

The Virgin and Child with the young St John

Black chalk | RCIN 912773

The purpose of Michelangelo’s drawing is uncertain. The sense of solidity, and the stylised rock behind the cross of the young St John the Baptist, suggest a design for a sculptural group, perhaps for the use of another artist. Alternatively, the careful finish might indicate that it was an independent drawing, perhaps created as a personal act of devotion.
