WILLEM VAN DE VELDE THE YOUNGER (1633-1707)
A Calm: A States Yacht under Sail close to the Shore with many other Vessels
c. 1655RCIN 405328
This is one of many views by the artist evoking the Zuider Zee (the inland sea) where numerous ships lay in anchor. The vessels are presented with particular attention to detail. The artist convincingly creates the effect of ripples in the water by following, in paint, the grain of the wooden panel.
