AELBERT CUYP (DORDRECHT 1620-DORDECHT 1691)
An Evening Landscape with Figures and Sheep
c.1655-59RCIN 405827
One of Cuyp’s last works, 'Evening Landscape' shows the artist at his best. By contrast with the precise perspective of Claude’s twilight scene (no. 30), Cuyp’s composition has intricate layers of foreground, middle-distance and background, with plants, animals, trees, figures, ruins, mountains and a distant town linking each section. The whole is bathed in golden light as the shadows lengthen.
Acquired by George IV in 1814
