JAN BOTH (UTRECHT C. 1618-52)

Landscape with St Philip Baptising the Eunuch

c.1640-49

RCIN 405544

Both uses evening light as a spiritual symbol to tell the biblical story of the conversion of an Ethiopian eunuch by St Philip (Acts of the Apostles VIII). The steep stony path to the left, which the kneeling man will resume, may suggest the ‘true way’, contrasting with the easy pleasures of the fertile plain to the right. Acquired by George IV in 1811 No. 31
