PHILIPS WOUWERMAN (HAARLEM 1619-HAARLEM 1668)
The Farrier of the Camp
c.1650RCIN 404809
The horseshoe on the flagpole of this tent advertises it as a temporary farrier’s shop, profiting from soldiers billeted nearby. A sutler seeks trade by bringing drinks to the customers. Wouwermans shows how people survive in time of war and in the inhospitable terrain of the dunes. Evening light transforms the scene into one of gentle beauty.
Acquired by George IV in 1814
