WILLEM VAN DE VELDE THE YOUNGER (1633-1707)
The 'Golden Leeuw' at Sea in Heavy Weather
1671RCIN 405324
The ‘Golden Lion’ is depicted twice from different angles in this painting, to show it at its best. The Dutch warship - built in 1666–triumphs over the waves; a reminder of the Dutch navy’s strength. The heraldic device of a golden lion appeared on many of the coats of arms of the Seven Provinces and became the symbol of the Dutch Republic.
Acquired by George IV in 1820
