AELBERT CUYP (DORDRECHT 1620-DORDECHT 1691)
Two Cavalry Troopers Talking to a Peasant
c.1650RCIN 404801
Cuyp never travelled to Italy, but was influenced by artists like Jan Both (no. 31) who had. His fanciful vision of cavalry troopers encountering a peasant is set in romantic terrain, with the mounted figure (wearing outdated slashed sleeves) dramatically outlined against the sky. The pose of the dappled horse is repeated in no. 41.
Acquired by George IV in 1814
