PIETRO ANNIGONI (1910-88)

Study for the portrait, Her Majesty in Robes of the British Empire

Signed and dated 1969

RCIN 453953

This is the highly finished preparatory study for a new portrait of The Queen which Annigoni was commissioned to paint by the Trustees of the National Portrait Gallery. The Queen is depicted in the mantle of the Order of the British Empire. Describing his approach to this portrait, the artist said: ‘I did not want to paint her as a film star; I saw her as a monarch, alone in the problems of her responsibility.’
