SIR NORMAN HARTNELL (1901-79)
Evening Gown
RCIN 100048
Hartnell pays tribute in this design to the 'robe de style', a seventeenth-century dress style with a tightly-fitting sleeveless bodice and bouffant skirt. The twentieth-century reinterpretation of this historic style is provided by Hartnell’s signature embroideries and separate panels of fabric over the hips.
Worn for the British Red Cross Society Centenary Film performance at the Royal Festival Hall, 9 May 1963
