Shooting for the Duke of Cambridge's prize, Wimbledon

Prince George, Duke of Cambridge (1819-1904), who was the Commander-in-Chief of the British Army and cousin of Queen Victoria, offered a prize of £50 for breech-loading rifles at ranges of 800, 900 and 1000 yards. The Duke later introduced a new breech-loading rifle for trial in various sections of the Army. In the photograph, the competitors are seen awaiting their turn to shoot.
