This unfinished work is the only surviving mythological scene by Gainsborough. George purchased it at a bargain price from the artist’s nephew. Gainsborough was known personally to the Prince, having worked extensively for George III and Queen Charlotte. The painting was recorded in the Store at Carlton House, valued at a modest 20 guineas (£21).
