SIR FRANCIS CHANTREY (1781-1841)
George IV (1762-1830)
1826RCIN 2136
Here we see George IV dressed as a Roman emperor or field marshal, appearing both lofty and amiable. Chantrey’s idealised portrait, created in 1821 at the time of the coronation, became the king’s official sculptural likeness. Several versions of the bust were made; this example was intended as a gift for George’s favourite brother, Frederick.
