Princess Beatrice
Of all her nine children, Princess Beatrice (1857–1944) was the queen’s preferred ‘constant companion’, on whom Victoria increasingly came to rely in later years. Princess Beatrice spent many hours by her mother’s side and was affectionately known to her as ‘Baby’. This bond continued following Beatrice’s marriage to Prince Henry of Battenberg in July 1885, with the aging queen insisting that the newly-weds live with her. Tennyson celebrated this steadfast companionship in poetry, writing: ‘True daughter, whose all faithful filial eyes / Have seen the loneliness of earthly thrones, / Wilt neither quit the widow’d Crown, nor let / This later light of Love have risen in vain’. Wat, Princess Beatrice’s fox terrier who was also a favourite of the queen, can be seen in the first photograph.
