JAMES GARRARD
Ascot Gold Cup Trophy, 1897
hallmark 1897/8RCIN 50272
Gold has traditionally been associated with sporting glory, and the Ascot Gold Cup has been one of the most prestigious prizes for flat racing since 1807. This trophy was won by Edward VII's highly successful racehorse Persimmon, whose win was celebrated with scenes of 'loyal enthusiasm'. The form of the trophy derives from a Roman marble vase.
