CORNELIS VERMEULEN (1644-1708/9)

ANNE DE CLEVES

c.1697-1713

RCIN 600900

Anne (1515–57) was Henry’s fourth wife, the daughter of the Duke of Juliers-Cleves. Their marriage in 1540 was a diplomatic alliance, and Henry agreed to wed Anne after seeing a portrait by Holbein. On meeting her, however, Henry was displeased and turned his attentions to her attendant Katherine Howard. Henry and Anne were divorced a few months later but Anne remained in England until her death.
