HANS HOLBEIN THE YOUNGER (1497/8-1543)

Sir Nicholas Poyntz (c.1510-1556)

c.1533-43

RCIN 912234

Sir Nicholas Poyntz (c.1510–56) was a prominent courtier. He rebuilt his residence at Iron Acton in Gloucestershire in the new Renaissance style, importing glass and ceramics from Italy. Here, he was visited by Henry and Anne Boleyn in August 1535. Holbein’s drawing reflects Poyntz’s love of fashion, showing him wearing a stylish feathered cap and in a pose which echoes portraits found on ancient medals and coins.
