SIR THOMAS MORE (1478-1535)

Utopia

1518

RCIN 1086970

Utopia depicts the society of a fictional island and its religious, political and social customs. Thomas More used the work as an indirect method of commenting upon the political and social ideas of the day, as well as satirising some of the failings he saw around him. Hans Holbein designed the woodcuts for this revised edition of Utopia which was printed in his home town of Basel in 1518. His name (‘HANS HOLB’) can be seen at the top corners of this page.
