JORIS HOEFNAGEL (1542-1601)

Windsor Castle seen from the North with figures in the foreground

c.1568

RCIN 912936

This drawing shows Windsor Castle as it looked around twenty years after Henry’s death. Although the landscape in the foreground is imaginary, the representation of the Castle is accurate, and may be based on sketches taken by Hoefnagel when he visited England in 1568–9. The view is taken from the north and shows St George’s Chapel to the far right. The gate in the Castle wall to the left of the chapel building is the subject of the grant.
