THOMAS ROWLANDSON (1757-1827)

King George III returning from hunting through Eton

c 1800

RCIN 913717

A watercolour of King George III's hunting party returning to Windsor Castle through Eton High Street. An alleyway on the left is marked 'Datchet Lane' and 'To Eton Bridge'. At the side of the road on the right stand onlookers. A man and a boy have removed their hats to bow to the King who sits in profile astride a white horse. A family with a donkey pass the entourage. On the horizon is Windsor Castle with the Round Tower, before George IV increased its height, and the North Terrace. Images of the King hunting were popular and were made throughout his reign.
