THOMAS ROWLANDSON (1757-1827)

The Triumvirate of Gloucester Place, or the Clarke, the Soldier and the Taylor.

7 Mar 1809

RCIN 810751

A hand-coloured print of The Duke of York seated at a circular table with his mistress Mrs Mary Ann Clarke. Gloucester Place was the London house where Mrs Clarke had entertained members of high society, including the Duke of York. Here the two are shown with Mrs Clarke’s friend Mrs Taylor discussing the list of promotions. Rowlandson criticises the Duke as corrupt and unfaithful. His behaviour is contrasted with that of the loyal husband John Gilpin, the subject of a comic poem by William Cowper quoted at the bottom. Inscribed in the plate: Pubd March 7 1809 by Thos Tegg No 111 Cheapside
