History of the Westminster election
1784RCIN 1081248
The publisher William Humphrey issued the History of the Westminster Election, which purported to be written by ‘Lovers of Truth and Justice’, in October 1784. The volume is a compilation of pro-Fox material relating to the election, including parliamentary debates, newspaper advertisements and satirical prints. A number of Rowlandson’s prints were reissued in the volume, which was dedicated to the Duchess of Devonshire.
This copy is beautifully bound in the Whig colours of brown and blue with gold tooling. Caps of liberty decorate the corners and Britannia holds one aloft in the brown leather oval at the centre. The copy may have been bound as a presentation copy for the Prince of Wales, one of Fox’s high-profile supporters, who placed it in his library at Carlton House.
Acquired by George IV when Prince of Wales
