THOMAS ROWLANDSON (1757-1827)

King Joe's Reception at Madrid.

21 Aug 1808

RCIN 810699

Napoleon placed his brother Joseph Bonaparte on the throne of Spain in 1808. King José was an unpopular ruler. Here Rowlandson contrasts the enthusiasm of the French with the opposition of the Spanish. French attempts to interfere in Spain sparked the Peninsular War, with an alliance of Britain, Spain and Portugal resisting French power. Cat. 69
