THOMAS ROWLANDSON (1757-1827)
Sketches at an Oratorio!
1800RCIN 810548
The use of a long narrow sheet of figures was developed by Rowlandson’s contemporary, Henry William Bunbury (1750–1811). Here, Rowlandson uses the format to examine the reactions of a group of characters to an oratorio. Oratorios – sacred compositions for singers and orchestra – were performed in London during Lent.
