The Pantheon theatre on Oxford Street in London opened in 1772, hosting opera and ballet until its destruction by fire in 1792. Rowlandson shows the stage from the perspective of the performers, who are dancing the ballet Amphion et Thalie, premiered on 17 February 1791. This print, published a month earlier, may have been intended as a puff for the forthcoming performance.
